I yesterday went to a talk at a place called the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, which I hadn't heard of before, and the talk was great but I am so going back, there were so many skulls and skeletons and pelts and things to see, including a blue whale right at the entrance.

I'd just finished reading still Life: Adventures in Taxidermy a few days ago, so the two or three cases interested me particularly: Birds and I think the term is gameheads, the head and shoulders of various hoofed mammals. All on loan from someone apparently.

How did I not know that a hedgehog is cute even when a skeleton?

Hi,

I'm a swan therian who is new here. I started working at a bird sanctuary yesterday and, something about holding and the picking the dead chicks from the floor of the vulture cages made me have a thought.

I didn't think I was, but, I am comfortable with handling dead bird bodies, and, I want to give the ones who died, particularly hit by cars, a better spiritual life. I would like to take the wings and feet, maybe skulls, and make them into talismans, working with the spirits in a deep way.

My problem is, I don't know the practical way to do this. How do I preserve the wing, especially on a large bird? I heard borax can work on a small wing. But, many of the birds here are large (I'm in Southern California). Ones I would expect to see killed on the road are large. I heard that in these times you can inject borax into the muscle. Is that true? What other tips are good to preserve?

If I found a dead bird on the road, what's the way to preserve it in the car until I get it home? I thought, a large plastic airtight tub with borax in, but, I'm not sure.

What's the best way to get rid of ticks, bugs, fleas and etc.?

Many thanks for the advice ^^ And yes, I know any wild bird parts is not legal. Spiritually though, I wish to take the chance, for their sake.

Alright, here's the official launch!

So one of the issues with making artwork with animal parts is legalities. Not only are there federal laws to keep track of, but laws vary from state to state as well, and it can be tough to keep up with what's legal to sell/possess where. Therefore, I present to you my latest creation:

United States-Relevant Animal Parts Laws

This is a thorough, but not exhaustive, collection of links to relevant laws regarding the sale and possession of animal parts in the U.S. It includes both relevant federal and international laws, and laws concerning each of the fifty states.

I AM NOT A LAWYER, AND THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE. I collected this so that other folks like me who collect and/or sell animal parts could have a quick reference to start their own research into legalities and draw their own conclusions. When in doubt, contact the relevant state's fish and game department.

If you have any suggestions of laws that I missed here, or other improvements, please feel free to let me know here or at whishthound (at) gmail.com.

I am offering this as a free resource. You are welcome to share this link to whomever may find it useful. I hope it helps :)
